About

From our beginnings almost 60 years ago, the Duneland Family YMCA's history has been marked by undeniable accomplishments in the face of challenges of changing times, but more than anything, what marks our history is our commitment to helping people. The Y is a safe, reliable community resource where both the young and young-at-heart can learn, grow, be accepted and connect with family and community members. The mission of the Duneland YMCA remains constant while its programs and services have adapted and evolved to meet the challenges facing children, teens, families, and adults. The work is possible thanks to donors and volunteers who give their time and financial support to the YMCA so generously.

The Duneland Family YMCA was established in 1966 at the "Westchester Branch" of the Porter County YMCA residing in the Thomas School. In 1972, the YMCA moved into its current location at 215 Roosevelt Street. In 1977, Duneland Family YMCA became incorporated and in 1981 added on and renovated the building to it's current state. In 2021, the Forchetti Family YMCA Center for Early Learning branch opens as a state licensed preschool. In 2024, the YMCA acquires the former Chesterton Middle School, beginning demolition and renovation, with the goal of opening the Duneland Family YMCA Healthy Living Campus in 2026.

WE BELIEVE that positive, lasting personal and social change can only come when we all work together to invest in our children, our health, and our neighbors.

WE BELIEVE that when we devote our full strength to our mission and cause, work in partnership with others, and build on our commitment to the children, families, and underserved people of Duneland, we can address the most pressing issues of our community unlike any other organization.

WE BELIEVE in collaborating with community partners to become a catalyst for positive and lasting change. The Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus will serve as an education, health, and social equity hub through partnerships with health and human services to reach and benefit the underserved and under-represented.

With your help, the Duneland YMCA Healthy Living Campus will increase the scale and scope of services accessible to all, address education, health and social inequities, and drive economic development in the Duneland region. With your help, we can be a catalyst for change, collaboration, and comprehensive community impact for generations to come. Will you join us? Donate Now
