Justin Adian and Richard Tinkler - POLYCHROME - Coming to Gallery 1882 on August 1, 2026
Chesterton, Indiana — Gallery 1882 is pleased to announce POLYCHROME, an exhibition running August 1 –
October 12, 2026. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, August 1, 2026, from 6:00-9:00pm and is
open to the public.
POLYCHROME brings together, Justin Adian and Richard Tinkler, two artists with distinct practices that engage
color as both material and conceptual force, inviting viewers to experience the expressive potential of
abstraction through richly layered surfaces, dynamic compositions, and inventive approaches to form.
While each artist employs a unique visual language, POLYCHROME explores the shared capacity of color to
shape perception, evoke emotion, and transform space. Through painting, sculpture, and material
experimentation, Adian and Tinkler investigate the relationships between structure and spontaneity, geometry
and gesture, surface and depth. Adian and Tinkler met at the University of North Texas decades ago, yet this is
the first time their works are being shown together.
Adian is recognized for his sculptural paintings that blur the boundaries between object and image. Using
stretched canvas, industrial materials, and vibrant color, his work challenges conventional notions of painting
while emphasizing texture, physicality, and formal precision.
Tinkler's work embraces an intuitive and process-driven approach to abstraction. Through energetic
compositions and sophisticated color relationships, his paintings reveal an ongoing dialogue between chance
and control, resulting in works that are both visually immersive and emotionally resonant.
Presented together, POLYCHROME highlights the enduring vitality of contemporary abstraction and
demonstrates how color can serve simultaneously as subject, structure, and sensation.
